Echo, do not match

The instinct when buying textiles is to match them to something already in the room. It is almost always the wrong move.

Exact matching reads as a showroom set. It also fails constantly in practice, because a colour judged from a screen is never quite the colour that arrives, and a near-match looks worse than no match at all.

What works is echoing. Pick up one colour that appears somewhere in the room, in a different tone or a different proportion, so the eye connects them without the two objects being twins.

A cushion carrying a hint of the curtain colour in a smaller quantity looks considered. A cushion in exactly the curtain fabric looks like it came with the sofa.

The design

A painted wolf and a woman, both in profile and turned to face each other, with white daisies set beside the wolf's ear and on the woman's shoulder. It is the combination that softens a hard subject without weakening it. Behind them stand a pine forest and a pink mountain, so the cushion carries coral, teal, cream and dusty rose rather than one colour, which makes it far easier to echo something you already own.
