It lives in one place, usually a bed or the corner of a room, and children end up lying against it rather than carrying it around.
That makes it a different kind of gift to a small soft toy. A pocket-sized plush becomes a companion. This becomes part of the room.
The wolf is the villain of nearly every story a child hears, which is exactly why owning a soft one matters. The thing from the forest turns out to be something you can hold, and that is a useful discovery to make at four years old.
It also helps that a wolf reads as a dog to a small child: familiar enough to approach, wild enough to be more interesting than a teddy.
It is modelled lying flat rather than sitting up, head resting down between two outstretched front paws and the body stretched out behind. Brown through the back and shoulders, grey around the head, with a cream face, chest, legs and paws, black claws and a dark tip to the tail.
The fur is soft rather than coarse, which is what determines whether a child actually sleeps against something.
When it needs washing, put it in a pillowcase, use a cool gentle cycle, and air dry it rather than tumbling. Heat mats synthetic fur permanently. A large plush takes a day or two to dry through, so plan the wash for a morning rather than a bedtime.
