The word was not a compliment when it was coined. Renaissance critics used it to dismiss medieval architecture as barbaric, naming it after the Goths, the tribes blamed for wrecking Rome.
They meant it as an accusation of crudeness. The buildings they were sneering at include most of the great cathedrals of Europe.
Some centuries later people decided they liked all of it, kept the insult as the name, and here we are. A style built on darkness, ornament and pointed forms, still carrying an abuse term as its label.
Heavier ornament, darker metal, more detail in the recesses and a general preference for the dramatic over the clean.
Dark finishes have a practical property worth knowing: the contrast lives in the low points, so scrubbing them with polish flattens the design permanently. A dry cloth on the raised surfaces is the whole care routine.
Bronze reads warmer and older and suits leather and earth colours. Silver is cooler and easier to match with jewellery you already own.
Bronze is the bolder choice and the harder one to combine.
