Grey wolves once ranged over more of the planet than any other large land mammal apart from humans, from Arctic tundra to Iranian mountain and Polish forest. The portrait printed here carries the colouring of the temperate animals: a broad head in warm brown, tan and cream, amber eyes set forward, ears held upright.
The head floats on a deep navy and teal ground, ringed by turquoise, blue and gold feathers and by slim white arrows with pale fletching. Filigree curls in from each corner. The setting is symbolic rather than scenic, plains and woodland country carried by its objects instead of its horizon.
What a wolf needs is prey and space rather than one particular kind of ground, which is why packs turn up in boreal forest, on open steppe, in desert mountain and on high plateau. Coat colour tends to follow the country. The browns and warm creams in this face belong to forest and mountain wolves rather than to the near white animals of the high Arctic.
The shape is a rounded rectangle, suited to a doorway, a bedside or the floor under a desk. See the rest of the wolf rug collection, or read the wolf, brother of the Amerindian for the meaning behind the feathers.
