Head thrown back and jaws open at the sky, the wolf inside this mould stands square on a strip of rough ground with its chest forward and its tail low. The cavity carries the whole standing figure, ruff, flanks and legs together, at 1.7 cm deep, so the cast comes out as a small three dimensional wolf with real modelling in it.
That depth suits mini cakes, individual brownies and set chocolate, and it takes fondant or modelling paste for a figure that stands on top of a larger cake. The second piece in the photograph is a finished cast painted afterwards, grey and brown down the back, pale through the belly, white at the paws, on a green base, which shows how much of the sculpting the silicone picks up.
Food grade silicone, non toxic, ultra flexible and non-stick, and easy to rinse clean. It works from -40°C to 230°C. The mould measures 8.5 x 7.2 x 1.7 cm and weighs 75 g, enough body to sit steady on a tray while it is filled. A light coat of neutral oil in the cavity helps the finished wolf release in one piece.
