The whole panel is the moon on this one. The acrylic is cut as a single full circle, and the wolf is engraved inside it: sitting back on its haunches, muzzle raised, brush tail curled round the feet. Lit from below, the animal reads as a solid shape set in the middle of a lit disc, and the disc itself reads as one bright coin standing upright in the dark. A touch control sits in the top of the base.
Why the head goes back
A howling wolf lifts its muzzle for sound rather than for scenery. Raising the head clears the call of the ground and throws it up and outward, and on a cold, still night a howl can carry for several miles across open country. Wolves call to locate one another after a hunt has scattered the pack, to gather everyone back together, and to tell the neighbouring pack where the border sits.
The moon was simply what people could see while they listened. The printed box carries the same idea, with constellations drawn across it, and the constellation of the wolf is a real one.
