Cut into hard angles, this wolf is built from shards rather than lines. Black and pale lilac planes lock together to make the head in profile, the jaw drops open on a single white tooth, and one red eye sits at the centre of the shape. The graphic is printed large across the white front panel with no border or frame around it, so the points of the ruff run right to the seams.
The front panel is white, the sides and back are grey mesh with an open weave you can see straight through, and the curved peak is grey cloth with rows of stitching following its shape. A grey button caps the crown. The split in colour follows the split in construction: solid cloth where the design sits, mesh where air needs to pass.
Half mesh caps started life as advertising. American feed mills, seed dealers and haulage firms ordered them by the box and gave them away with a company name across the front, which is how they came to be called gimme caps. The build outlived the advertising: a firm front that holds a graphic flat, open mesh behind.
One size, 55 to 58 cm. Colours: grey, black, green, blue and military. The full wolf cap line-up is worth a look.
