The artwork sets a man in a Plains feathered bonnet beside three wolves, all drawn in silver, white and cold blue over a black starfield. One wolf watches from his shoulder, one bares its teeth near the hem, the third turns away in profile. The shirt itself is black, so the picture seems to surface out of the dark rather than sit on top of it.
Putting a person and wolves in one frame is not an accident of design. Among the Anishinaabe, Ma'iingan the wolf walks beside Nanabozho as the world is named, and the two part as brothers under the teaching that whatever comes to the wolf will come to the people as well.
The Skiri Pawnee were known across the Plains as the Wolf People, and their scouts travelled in wolf hides because a wolf reads open country better than a man does. The bonnet belongs to Plains nations in particular, where each feather stood for something earned. You can read more in the wolf, brother of the Amerindian.
