Sound behaves differently under trees, and this disc puts a wolf in the middle of that: conifers crowding both edges, a ridge of mountains behind, a low disc of sun or moon over the peaks, and the wolf standing side on with its face turned out.
Trunks, needles and undergrowth scatter and absorb the higher part of a call, so a howl that would cross open ground for several miles is swallowed far sooner in thick forest. Wolves work around it. They favour ridgelines, clearings, frozen lakes and rising ground, anywhere the sound can leave cleanly, which is more or less the geography drawn here.
What survives the trees is the low, held part of the note. Long wavelengths bend around trunks instead of breaking on them, the same reason the bass from a party comes through a wall while the words do not.
