Head tipped back, throat open, the wolf on this disc is drawn in a few loose dark strokes, with small circles, crescents and comma marks scattered around it like sound leaving the frame.
That head position is acoustics rather than theatre. Lifting the muzzle sends the call up and out over the ground instead of into it, where grass, snow and soil would soak up much of it. A howl is held long and pitched low, its fundamental note usually under 800 cycles a second, and low notes bend around obstacles rather than stopping at them. Over open country a single call can reach a listener miles away.
Every wolf also sounds like itself. Researchers can identify individual animals from the shape of their howls on a spectrogram, and a group sliding across several pitches at once can convince a rival that the pack is bigger than it is.
