Standing square to the room, this wolf is engraved whole: the head carried low between high hunched shoulders, ears swept flat back, lips lifted off the teeth, and every claw on the front paws picked out one at a time. The drawing is fine line work rather than solid shape, so light runs along each engraved stroke and the animal appears to float clear of its base.
Line work takes colour differently from a filled design. The hue travels the length of every engraved stroke, so the whole animal is described in bright lines rather than as a block of colour. Set to deep blue, the standing pose turns cold and watchful. Amber or red warms the same lines into something nearer firelight, which suits a room you are settling into at the end of the day.
