Sculptors call it undercutting: cutting away behind a form so that shadow, not line, carries the depth. These two wolf heads are worked exactly that way. The eye sockets drop into darkness, the fur breaks into ridges along the muzzle and down the neck, and the jaw opens on pointed teeth.
The ears stand proud of the skull, the brow rolls forward over the socket, and the ruff runs back from the jaw in carved strands. In the photograph every hollow is dark and every raised edge is bright, so the face is drawn in light and shadow rather than in outline. That is the oldest way of giving a carved head its presence.
Heavy heads, bared teeth and blackened metal have been the language of biker jewellery for decades, and this pair keeps to it. The wolf is modelled as an animal rather than reduced to a badge: brow, muzzle, ruff and teeth all read as parts of one head.
Metal, offered in gold and silver, and photographed here as a pair in the silver colour with a straight post behind. It sits with the rest of the wolf earrings, and there is more on wearing pieces like these in our guide to wolf themed accessories.
