A rope braid with a still centre

Round braiding is old work. Instead of lying flat, the strands travel around each other so the finished cord holds a circular section and keeps its shape as it turns the wrist. That is what runs the length of this band: black leather plaited into a rope, the diagonal ridges of the plait visible the whole way round.

At the front the braid quiets down. A polished, bright metal plate is set into the band and held at each end by a paired collar clamped over the leather. The plate carries an etched wolf, head lifted mid howl, standing on a line inside a circle. The engraving reads dark against the bright surface, so the motif carries at a glance with no colour involved at all.

Opposite the plate sits the closure, a rectangular fold-over catch in the same bright metal, made of two panels.

Leather, plate and wear

Braided leather ages honestly. The high points of the plait meet the light first and the hollows hold shadow, so the rope keeps its depth from any angle and the bright plate reads clearly against it. Kept out of long soaks, the leather stays supple.
