The star field here is not exaggerated. It is roughly what the sky looks like without artificial light, and it is a view that has quietly disappeared from most of the world.
A global survey of night sky brightness found that around a third of humanity can no longer see the Milky Way from where they live, and in North America and Europe the figure is far higher. For most people in a city, this canvas shows something genuinely unfamiliar.
Wolves and dark skies have gone the same way, and for overlapping reasons. Both need country without much of us in it.
A wolf sits in silhouette on a low rise at the centre of the run, head back, mid howl. A large moon hangs at the top left and a bare winter tree spreads in black across the right, and the rest is star field, blue from edge to edge. The wolf is small enough that the sky is plainly the subject.
Dark, but not dramatic. The composition is settled rather than confrontational, which makes it one of the few deep-palette pieces that works in a living room.
Give it a wall the daylight crosses rather than one it faces, or the surface will mirror the window through the middle of the day.
