The idea underneath this design is a real one, and it is close to the opposite of the European view of the same animal.
Across a great many Native American nations the wolf was treated as family: a teacher, a guide, sometimes a brother, and in several origin accounts a direct ancestor. The Cherokee avoided killing them altogether, and where it could not be avoided, specific rites followed.
Europe spent the same centuries paying bounties for the same species. Two continents, one animal, two completely different relationships.
Our article on the wolf as brother covers the traditions properly. The artwork itself is a modern romantic composition rather than a record of any one nation.
Rendered with enough tonal depth to read as a photograph rather than a graphic. Detailed work of this kind rewards being seen close up, which suits a bag that people stand next to on trains and in queues.
A laptop in a sleeve, a charger, a notebook, a bottle, lunch and a jacket.
29 x 16 x 42 cm, Oxford fabric and black nylon, foam-lined back, air cushion shoulder straps, strong zips. Water resistant rather than fully waterproof.
