Indian Chief Wolf T-Shirt

A single wolf in painted markings

One wolf fills the whole shirt, head on, its green gold eyes level with yours. White scrollwork curls across one side of the face, a blue stone sits in a small triangular brow piece, and a turquoise hoop strung with beads hangs beneath the chin. Fletched arrows cross behind the shoulders and rust coloured canyon walls open up in the distance. The print runs edge to edge over body and sleeves, so the teal and burnt orange carry all the way round the arms.

Where the hoop comes from

That hoop is a dreamcatcher, and it belongs to one people first of all: the Ojibwe, who call it asabikeshiinh, the spider. In the old telling Asibikaashi, Spider Woman, looked after the children of the nation, and when the people scattered too widely for her to reach every cradle the women wove webbed hoops in her place and hung them where a baby slept. Only later, through the pan-Indian movement of the 1960s and 70s, did the form travel to other nations and then to everyone else.

Set against a wolf, it reads as protection kept in the family. Wolves and people have been described as relatives in that part of the world for a very long time.

Polyester and spandex, cut unisex, with a high resolution 3D print. Machine wash at 30 degrees maximum. Sizes S to 5XL.
