Dark cushions anchor a light room

A pale sofa with pale cushions on it can look strangely unfinished, as though the scheme has not settled. Adding something dark fixes it immediately, and there is a reason.

The eye reads dark as heavy and light as weightless. A room with all its dark tones at the top, or none at all, feels like it is floating. Putting weight low down, at seat level, gives the arrangement a base.

It is the same instinct that puts dark plinths under pale statues and dark shoes under pale trousers.

One or two dark cushions among lighter ones does the whole job. A whole sofa of them just makes the room heavy.

The subject

The wolf is drawn from the shoulders up, in profile and facing left with its head lowered, in silver and charcoal grey with bands of bright turquoise along the brow, the ruff and the flank. The eye is turquoise as well. Behind it the sky is deep blue-green, with nebula cloud, scattered stars, a few streaking meteors and a ringed planet low on the left.

A wolf at night, which is when they are most audible and, as it happens, not when they are most active. Wolves are busiest around dawn and dusk; deep night is quieter than the folklore suggests.

Night imagery persists because that is when people historically heard them.
