The rope made of impossible things

Fenrir grew until the gods were frightened of him, and two attempts to chain him failed outright. The third worked because it was not a chain.

Gleipnir was made by dwarves from six ingredients, all of them things that cannot be gathered: the sound a cat makes moving, a woman's beard, the roots of a mountain, the sinews of a bear, the breath of a fish and the spittle of a bird.

The story explains, in passing, why none of those things exist any more. They were used up.

The hand it cost

Fenrir agreed to be bound only if a god would place a hand in his mouth as surety. Tyr did it, knowing what would follow, and lost the hand when the trick became clear.

It is one of the few episodes in Norse myth where a god pays a real price for a deception, and it is why Tyr is the one associated with courage rather than cleverness.

Wearing it

A round medallion inside a raised rim, carrying a wolf's head in profile with its jaws open and its fur cut in fine strokes. Runic staves are set into the recessed field around it, with a spoked compass stave low on the neck.

Stainless steel in a golden or silver tone, so it takes daily wear without tarnishing.
