Odin is the god who gave an eye for wisdom and hung nine days on the world tree for the runes. He kept two wolves, Geri and Freki, and fed them everything from his own table.
He is also the god Fenrir kills at Ragnarok, which means the wolf appears in his story twice: once as companion, once as ending. That doubleness is the whole appeal of Norse mythology and it is why this pairing recurs in the art.
Here it is stated plainly. Odin's face fills the front, hooded and heavily bearded, and a wolf stands at his shoulder with the fur cut in fine strokes running down the side of the band.
