Charles Perrault put Red Riding Hood into print in 1697 and let the wolf win. The Brothers Grimm published their version in 1812 and sent in a huntsman to open the ending back up. Older tellings had been passed around European firesides long before either book, and the red hood is the detail that survived every one of them.
The cape is the centrepiece: deep red, worn with the hood up, spreading wide at the sides and falling to knee length, with a red ribbon tie at the throat. Under it sits a dress with a white centre panel at the bodice and skirt front, and a full gathered skirt in a lighter red. The bodice is black and laced across the front with white cord, and a band of black floral lace runs across the lower part of the skirt, above the hem, which keeps the eye travelling down rather than stopping at the waist.
An adult costume, and it works whether you play the girl who walks into the wood or the one who already knows what is waiting there. Refer to the size guide in the image section.
