It is the detail nobody forgets, and it is not part of the older folk tale at all.
Versions of the story circulated orally across Europe for a long time before anyone wrote them down, and in those the girl has no red hood and often no distinguishing garment whatsoever. Charles Perrault added it when he published his version in 1697, and it stuck so completely that the character is now named after it.
One writer's costume decision, three hundred years ago, is why the single most recognisable colour in European folklore is red.
It also happens to be the reason this print works at bag scale. The girl is drawn in an anime style, hood and scarf and boots all in red, basket of apples in one hand, and behind her a pale silver wolf curves right across the panel in a bright turquoise winter wood. One warm colour against all that cool blue is the most legible arrangement there is, and it survives being reduced where a subtle palette would not.
