Wolves are built for distance rather than speed. A wolf trots at roughly eight kilometres an hour and can keep that up for hours, which is how a pack covers a territory that may run to hundreds of square kilometres. The hind foot drops neatly into the print left by the front one, so a wolf on the move leaves a far tidier line of tracks than a dog does.
