Earthshine is the faint grey light that fills the unlit part of a crescent moon, sunlight reflected off our own planet and thrown back onto the lunar surface. Leonardo da Vinci worked out the cause of it some five hundred years ago. These earrings take the lit part of that picture: a bright crescent swinging from the open round of a hoop.

Stones across the curve

The face of each crescent is set with a close field of small clear stones, laid so tightly that very little metal shows between them. The rim of the crescent stays smooth and polished, which gives the sparkle a clean border to sit inside and keeps the shape readable across a room.

Hoop and swing

Each crescent hangs from the side of its hoop on a short link rather than from the top, so it tips and turns with you as you move. The hoops are unset and brightly polished, wide enough to read as a circle beside the moon they carry. Two are shown in the photograph, one for each ear.
