Recognition here comes from outline alone. The lifted muzzle, the sloped back, the low tail: that shape on its own carries the animal, which is why the howling profile has become shorthand for the whole species.
The wolf here stands on a rock in solid black, head tipped up, with no marking at all inside the shape. The light arrives from behind: a large pale moon high on the sock and banks of cloud lit silver against a blue grey sky. The rock is black as well, so animal and stone read as one mass along the bottom of the print.
Because the figure is unlit, your eye finishes it. You supply the fur, the weight, the sound. That is one of the oldest moves in picture making, and it holds up at this size.
