What a north-facing room needs

North-facing rooms get no direct sun, and the light that reaches them is cooler and bluer than in a south-facing room. It is why a paint colour chosen in a shop can look grey and lifeless once it is on the wall at home.

The fix is not more light. It is warmth in the furnishings: amber, rust, gold, warm reds. They put back what the daylight is not supplying.

Textiles are the cheapest place to do it, because you can add or remove them in minutes. A warm-toned cushion in a cool room does more than most people expect for the money.

In a bright south-facing room the same cushion can look overheated, which is worth knowing before buying.

Warm light indoors

The other place this design comes into its own is under evening lamps, which are warm-toned themselves. Warm colours intensify under warm light; cool ones go grey.

If a room is mostly used after dark, warm textiles are the right call.

What is printed

Three wolves. One faces you head on, brown and grey with pale eyes, and two more stand either side of it in profile with their heads raised, worked into the cloud behind. A large moon disc rises behind them, a thin crescent sits in the top corner, and a line of dark conifers runs along the bottom edge. The palette is sepia, rust and amber over a black star field, with a burst of white sparks at the centre.
