Dreamcatchers began with the Ojibwe of the Great Lakes, a small hoop of bent willow strung with a loose web and hung near a sleeping child. This design takes that hoop, gives it a toothed rim and a fine woven net, then sets a wolf through the middle of it, head and neck in profile with the muzzle lifted in a howl. Three long feathers and a beaded strand hang from the lower edge. All of it is one flat black, and the wall shows through every gap in the weave.
Howling is how a scattered pack stays a pack. Wolves range over territory far too large to keep each other in sight, so an animal a day's travel from the others can find them by voice alone, and individual wolves are distinct enough in pitch and phrasing to be told apart. That is the sound this raised muzzle is making. Wolves also hold a long place in the stories and ceremonies of the peoples who share their ground, which we look at in the wolf and the Amerindian.
