Black or red is not a small choice

It changes what the piece is, more than a metal tone ever does.

Black is neutral. It reads as formal, it goes with everything, and it lets the metalwork be the subject. If you want a piece you never have to think about before putting on, take the black.

Red is a statement and behaves like one. It is warm where steel is cool, it pulls the eye straight to the stone, and it will not sit quietly against strong colours. It is the more interesting piece and the harder one to wear.

Buy black if this is your only pendant. Buy red if it is not.

Set stones need a little care

A stone in a metal setting has one weakness, and it is the setting rather than the stone. Repeated knocks loosen a claw or a bezel long before they damage the stone itself.

Take it off for anything physical, store it where it will not knock against other jewellery, and keep it out of ultrasonic cleaners, which are very good at loosening settings.

Warm water and a soft cloth is otherwise all it wants.
