The grin arrives before anything else does. A block of big square white teeth is stitched right across the length of the snout, wide and comic rather than fierce, and it sets the tone for the whole of this small wolf.

The body is a warm caramel tan. A wedge-shaped head runs out into a long muzzle tipped by a large round black nose, with one round black eye set high on the side of the face. The ears stand tall and pointed with darker tan inside them. Behind, a bushy tail in deep brown with a white tip curves up and out. The arms and legs are short and stubby, and the whole figure sits back on its haunches.

Why pups play at hunting

A wolf litter spends its first summer wrestling, pouncing and stealing things from one another. It looks like pure play, and it is, but it is also how cubs work out who leads, who gives way, and how hard is too hard to bite. Adults join the game and let themselves be beaten, again and again.
