Prince Albert gave his name to the watch chain, and the habit he set was straightforward: a bar through the waistcoat buttonhole, the watch in the pocket, the links running free across the front. This bronze toned gousset is made for that kind of wear.
The cover is given over entirely to a wolf's head, raised well clear of the metal in deep relief. The muzzle is drawn back off bared teeth, the eyes are narrowed to slits, and the mane behind flares out in long blades that reach almost to the rim. The surrounding field is left smooth so the sculpture has room to read at arm's length, with a fine beaded edge running round the case. Above it the bow carries a flower and scrollwork, with a fluted crown seated between two shoulders.
At about 4.7 cm the case is a full sized gousset rather than a small fob, and the chain runs to roughly 80 cm, enough to cross a chest and still leave a swag hanging. Inside, a quartz movement keeps the time.
