A long tapering snout leads the whole design, ending in a dark point well below the eyes. The wolf looks drawn rather than modelled: two tall ears with dark inner panels, two round white eyes with pinprick pupils, and a row of small white teeth set along the jaw.
The fur is close to black, broken by a pale grey oval across the belly and a small stitched cross near its base. His arms hang long and loose from the shoulders, and his feet are broad and flat, the way an illustrator draws feet that have to carry a character across a page.
The wolf of the fireside tale had to be recognised in a single glance, and picture books inherited that job. Snout, ears and teeth are exaggerated until the silhouette reads as wolf from across a room, while the eyes are drawn large and round so the character's mood is clear at once. This Auzou wolf follows the same grammar, which is why he feels familiar before a word has been read.
He is the modern descendant of the wolf who spoke from grandmother's bed and huffed at the pigs' doors. Still the engine of the plot, now soft enough to be forgiven by bedtime.
