A blue-green stone sits at the centre of this wolf's brow, set into a diamond of worked metal, and white paint runs back from it across the forehead in curls, dots and fine trailing lines. The animal has been dressed the way a portrait sitter is dressed: deliberately, and to be read.
The whole picture is painted, not drawn. Fur is built from broken strokes of grey, warm brown and rust, and the background dissolves into copper smoke and deep teal with no horizon to fix it anywhere. The eyes are the sharpest thing in the frame, pale yellow-green, level and unhurried.
White feathers rise behind the ears like a raised crest. A small beaded hoop swings near the jaw, and turquoise plumes fall down the chest on strands strung with amber beads.
