Victorian door furniture had a favourite trick: a beast cast in metal, its mane spread flat against the timber, a heavy ring held in its jaws for the caller to lift. These earrings bring that shape to the ear. Each is a wolf seen head on, the ruff fanning out behind it into a rounded shield, with a ring hanging from the mouth.
The ring hangs clear of the muzzle and reads as its own element, which gives the front of the earring two levels. Above it the face is fully worked: brows drawn down, snout creased, ears swept back into the mane, and the locks cut so that they curl outward to the rim of the shield.
In the photograph the metal is dark in every recess and bright on the high points, the state real door hardware reaches after decades of hands and weather. That contrast is what lets the face carry: each crease already holds its own shadow, so the wolf is legible before you go looking for the detail.
Metal, offered in gold and silver, and shown here as a pair with the silver colour photographed. Find it among the wider wolf jewelry, and read where the gothic wolf came from in what is a werewolf.
