Curling scrollwork runs over the brow and cheeks of this front facing wolf mask, framing upright ears, deep set eyes and a heavy muzzle. The lines stand up from the face rather than sitting flush with it, so the shape stays readable at arm's length.
The greatest wolf in Norse myth was never beaten by strength. Fenrir, son of Loki, broke two iron fetters for sport. The third binding was Gleipnir, made by dwarves and looking like nothing much at all, so the wolf agreed to it only if a god laid a hand between his jaws as a pledge. Tyr did, and lost the hand. Snorri Sturluson sets it out in the Prose Edda, and the gods win by cunning and by one of them keeping a bargain he knew would cost him.
