This is the single most common mistake people make with an antiqued piece, and it is not reversible.
An antique finish is produced by darkening the metal and then polishing the raised surfaces back to bright, leaving the recesses dark. That contrast is what makes a carved design readable: without it, an ornate piece flattens into a shiny blur.
So when the low points look dirty, they are not. Scrubbing them with polish or a dip cleaner strips the finish out of the detail and the piece never looks the same again.
Wipe the raised surfaces with a dry soft cloth and leave the recesses alone. That is the whole method.
Never use a silver dip, and never use an abrasive polish. If it needs more than a cloth, warm water and a soft brush, dried immediately.
The inset stone gives the design a single point of colour against the metal, which is what stops an ornate piece from reading as busy.
Keep it out of ultrasonic cleaners, which loosen set stones.
