A ring hangs loose in this wolf's jaws, held the way a knocker hangs from a lion's mouth on an old hall door. Behind the face the mane is worked into a crown of pointed spikes that spread and curve back, closing a rough circle around a snarling head. The finish is dark, close to gunmetal, and the ridges of the brow and snout come up a lighter grey.
The Norse had their own wolf man and there was nothing romantic in him. They howl, they hunt, they turn on each other, and only on the tenth day can the pelts be shed. Ireland answered with the people of Ossory, described by Gerald of Wales around 1188. A man and a woman took wolf shape for seven years at a time, and one of them, meeting a priest in the woods, spoke to him and asked for last rites for his dying mate. It is a strange and gentle turn for a werewolf story.
