Three hoops sit in a row across an ivory ground patterned like old damask. Only the middle one holds a wolf, a brown and white face ringed with rust, teal and cream feathers. The two outer hoops carry pale silver medallions instead, with the same long feathers falling from them. Round the edge runs a band of jewel colour: turquoise, coral and green beads set into a geometric border.
The dreamcatcher began with the Ojibwe, a willow ring webbed with nettle fibre and hung above a cradle board. It spread to many other nations during the pan-Indian years of the 1960s and 70s and has been made in a hundred styles since. The warm palette chosen here, rust and coral and turquoise against cream, owes more to southwestern textiles than to Great Lakes work.
In a good many nations a feather is not ornament. An eagle feather is given for something done and then kept, sometimes for a lifetime, sometimes passed on. That history is part of why the long plumes falling from all three hoops hold as much of this design as the wolf does, and why the eye keeps travelling down them to the border.
