Two wolves meet here head to head, muzzles almost touching under a full moon and a scatter of stars, with a snow covered range spread out below them, and the pairing is truer than it looks. Grey wolves live at altitude across much of their range, and the highest of them hold the Tibetan Plateau above four thousand metres, where the air carries little oxygen and winter takes most of the year.
Altitude shapes how they travel. In deep snow a mountain pack moves in single file, each animal stepping into the print of the one ahead, so the whole group crosses a pass on the effort of the leader breaking trail.
