Wolf Bed Comforter Crystal Pattern

Ink and starlight carry this one. A wolf runs across a white ground in fine grey line work, and where its head would be there is a burst of petals, a chrysanthemum opening in place of a face. Behind it sits a black triangle of night sky, scattered with stars and topped by a thin crescent moon. The pillow covers take the same figure at a smaller scale.

The wolf road overhead

The Pawnee called the Milky Way the Wolf Road, the path the dead follow across the sky, and they knew the bright star we call Sirius as the Wolf Star. Wolves and the night sky have been bound together on that ground for a very long time, so an animal running out of a field of stars sits closer to old sky lore than to modern graphic fashion.

The flowering head is the artist's own addition. It turns the animal into something nearer a story than a portrait: a relative in motion, half seen, on its way somewhere. Against so much white the black triangle reads almost as a window.
