Lupus, the wolf, is a real constellation in the southern sky, one of the forty eight that Ptolemy catalogued nearly two thousand years ago. It shows the animal whole rather than a head or a paw print, which is what these earrings do: the full standing body, four legs, tail carried low, muzzle lifted into a howl.
In the spring of 1006 a star flared inside that same constellation, bright enough that watchers in China, Egypt, Iraq and Europe all wrote it down. It is still the brightest such event in recorded history.
Each wolf carries a small heart set on the hindquarter, just above the back leg. It is the one curved shape on a body otherwise built from long runs and points, and it sits well behind the head, so the eye finds the raised muzzle first and the heart second.
Everything else is carried by the edge: the dip of the back, the low sweep of the tail, the wedge of the raised muzzle. Each wolf hangs from a small ring onto a curved hook wire and swings free below it, so the profile turns a little as you move. Both wolves in the photograph face the same way, which means worn together they point in one direction.
Metal, offered in gold and silver; the photograph shows the silver, polished rather than brushed. Two earrings are shown, one for each ear. More shapes like it sit in wolf earrings, and the sky version is mapped out in our piece on the constellation of the wolf.
