The ruff around the shoulders
Wolves carry their longest hair around the neck and shoulders, a ruff they can raise when they want to look larger. It is why a wolf in full winter coat reads as broad and heavy through the chest and light at the hip. The head printed on the back of this jacket keeps that outline, wide through the ears and cheeks and tapering to a point below the jaw, and it sits high between the shoulders.

Wolf colouring runs from near white through tawny and smoke to solid black, and littermates from the same den can differ completely. Black coats trace back to a single gene that entered wolves from domestic dogs thousands of years ago and spread because it suited the forest. Elegance in a wolf is function: hair long enough to shed snow, dense enough to sleep out in it. Here that variety is flattened to two blues, navy inside a bright cyan outline, with a white muzzle and brow doing the rest.
