The head sits in profile against a deep purple ground, built from loose brushstrokes of magenta, turquoise, orange and white that never quite settle into flat colour. One amber eye holds steady in the middle of it, and the ruff breaks apart into ribbons of paint at the shoulder. The purple runs right to the edges of the printed panel, so the artwork carries across the whole face of the blanket.
Tyrian purple, the shade worn by Roman and Byzantine rulers, was drawn from sea snails, and thousands of them went into dyeing a single garment. That expense kept the colour tied to ceremony for centuries. A young chemist named William Perkin changed things in 1856, when he stumbled on the first synthetic purple dye and brought the shade within everyone's reach.
Here the deep ground does the quiet work, holding the brighter strokes together so the paint reads clearly from the far side of a room. Flexible and resistant microfibre carries the colour, and 3D high definition printing keeps the strokes crisp where they cross one another.
