Snow falls right across this canopy, soft pale specks drifting in front of a wolf's face cropped so close that it fills all eight panels. The muzzle runs down towards the rim, the fur is grey going to white along the bridge of the nose, and two copper red eyes sit high in the frame.
Wolf cubs are born with blue eyes. Somewhere between two and four months the colour turns, settling into the yellows and ambers that adults keep for life, so a grown wolf with blue eyes is essentially unheard of. This print takes that warmth further, into a deep red orange that lifts the face clear of the grey behind it.
Opened out, the head is printed several times life size, and things you would never pick out on a live animal at a distance become plain: the change in hair length between cheek and brow, the dark rim of the nostril, snow sitting on the coat without melting into it.
That last detail is not artistic licence. A wolf's undercoat insulates so well that almost no body heat reaches the outer guard hairs, so snow lands and simply stays. Keeping the weather at the surface, well away from anything warm, is the same trick a canopy pulls over your head.
