Backlight does the work in this one. The wolf's head is nearly pure black and fills the whole front, while every hair along the ears and ruff catches a cold blue edge thrown from the forest behind. Two green eyes hold the centre. Faint trunks show up at the shoulders, the artwork carries down both sleeves, and the hood stays black.
A bark is short and sharp and dies inside the trees. A howl works the other way, one long note held near a single pitch, with little of the crackle that thick woodland swallows first. Raising the muzzle lifts that note clear of the ground, which is the whole reason for the pose.
Wolves also call at midday, at dawn, in fog and under flat grey cloud. The moon has no part in it and only happens to be up on the nights people are outside to hear them. Dark coats get their own study in the black wolf portrait.
