Winter light does something strange to colour. Snow throws the blue of the sky back up into everything standing on it, and that is the effect the whole print sits inside: the wolf, the haze, the faint conifer treeline on either side, the sky above the hood, all held within one narrow band of pale blue and white.
A single tone across an entire image would normally drain the life out of a face. This one keeps it because of the eyes, pitched a few steps brighter and more saturated than any other blue in the picture. Everything else recedes into mist by degrees, the trees furthest back, the ruff a little nearer, the muzzle nearest of all, and the eyes stay put at the front. That is the whole reason a head reads from a distance while a landscape does not.
The mist and the trees carry over the sleeves and up into the hood, so the wolf appears to be stepping out of weather rather than sitting on top of it.
