Cold air makes a howl visible. This photograph, printed in black and white across the full panel, catches a wolf mid call with its head tilted up and a plume of breath curling away into the light above it. The face sits in deep shadow, rimmed by a fine line of white where the backlight catches the fur along the muzzle, brow and ear.
That plume is water vapour, warm lung air condensing the moment it meets winter air. It also gives the picture its structure. The wolf holds the lower half of the frame and everything above is vapour and grey mist, so the eye travels upward exactly as the sound would.
