A wolf's winter coat works in two parts: a dense woolly underfur that traps warm air against the skin, and longer guard hairs that shed snow and wind above it. The print on this fleece borrows that idea, and the fabric follows it, holding warmth in the air caught between its fibres.

A pattern with somewhere to go

The wolf pattern runs across the body rather than sitting as a single badge on the chest, so the animal reads from across a room. Fleece takes print differently from woven cloth. Its surface is soft and slightly raised, which softens hard edges and gives the markings something of the blur of real fur.

Modern fleece was developed in the late 1970s as a synthetic answer to wool, warm without weight and quick to dry. It has been the layer people reach for on cold mornings ever since.
