Contour lines that build a face

Every stroke in this panel is a curve, and the curves are stacked the way height lines are stacked on a map. Follow them and they wrap the brow, part around the eyes, tighten across the muzzle and fan out along the cheeks, so the wolf's face is made of ripples rather than outlines. That much engraving catches a great deal of light, and the head gains real presence once the base comes on.

Why cool light reads so well after dark

Cool colours put more distance between the lit lines and the dark room behind them, so blue and cyan settings show the contours at their sharpest. Blue is how the lamp is photographed, and it is a fair place to start.

The warm end of the sixteen colours does something else entirely. Amber, red and soft yellow soften the contrast and let the face sit low and quiet in a corner, the sort of light that belongs to the end of an evening. Both are a button away on the remote, and the intensity adjusts alongside them, so one lamp gives you a bright cool face for the early evening and a dim warm one for the hours after.
