The craft of a repeat

An all over print is a tile. Somewhere in this design there is a rectangle that meets itself on every edge, and the designer's real work is hiding that join so the eye never finds a grid. The usual method is the half drop, where each column of the tile slides down against its neighbour and the strongest shapes fall off any straight line. Across the sleeves the wolves arrive at irregular intervals rather than in rows.

Scale, and how a print reads

Pattern scale decides how a drawing behaves once it is wrapped around a shoulder. Mid scale motifs read as texture from across a room and resolve into wolves close up, which is where this one sits. Much larger and the seams cut the drawing apart. Much smaller and it turns to noise.
