The paw is a snowshoe

A wolf's foot is startlingly large for the animal attached to it, and that is deliberate engineering rather than an accident of scale.

Spreading the toes widens the contact area and spreads the weight, which is what lets a wolf move over deep snow that would leave a deer floundering. It is the single feature that decides who eats and who does not through a northern winter.

Front and back are different sizes

The front paws are noticeably bigger than the hind, because the front end carries more of the animal's weight and does the braking.

Trackers use it. Front and hind prints in a trail tell you which way an animal was heading and roughly how fast, long after it has gone.

A simple shape wears well

Here the paw stands raised on a round medallion, toes and claws clear of a roughened background, with a band of runes circling the whole edge and a thick ribbed bail above. The recesses are darkened, so the paw and the lettering read from a distance.

The paw itself is a clean shape with no fine detail to lose, which makes it one of the easier designs to wear daily and under a shirt.
