It does not absorb liquid the way cotton does, so spills sit on the surface for a few seconds rather than soaking straight through. It survives being washed constantly without shrinking or losing shape. It dries in a fraction of the time, which matters when a cushion needs to be back on the bed by bedtime. And it resists creasing, so it looks unironed rather than crumpled.

For a cushion that will be sat on, slept on, dragged around and occasionally used as a weapon, those are the properties that count.

Cubs actually do howl

This is a photograph rather than an illustration. One pup, forepaws hooked over a lichen crusted rock, muzzle lifted and turned, mouth open, against a plain blue sky with nothing else in the frame. The sky takes up most of the cover, so the cub reads clearly from across a room.

Pups begin howling within their first few weeks, long before they can do anything useful with it, and the early attempts are thin and unsteady.

They improve with practice like anything else. A cub calling is usually contacting the family rather than announcing anything, which is the least frightening version of the sound.
